Grace and Courtesy: Learning to Live Freely With Others
Activity 6 -12 year's old montessori

Date

When the child enters the 6–12 age group, they move into a new plane of development in which the social dimension becomes central.

The transition from the 3–6 classroom to the 6–12 classroom represents a significant change. It is therefore essential to take the child’s emotional development into account in order to ensure a harmonious transition.

At this stage, the child is no longer focused solely on individual needs. They experience a deep need for belonging and seek to define themselves as a full member of a group.  Social integration becomes essential, and the child develops an increased sensitivity to notions of justice, fairness, and respect.

Learning social codes is therefore fundamental to enabling the child to live harmoniously with others. Lessons in grace and courtesy take on their full meaning: they are lived, experienced, discussed, and sometimes questioned. Through these exchanges, the child refines their understanding of human relationships.

On a daily basis, opportunities for conflict resolution, collective reflection on classroom rules, and group work are offered. Older children also play a supportive role with younger ones, guiding them with respect and kindness. In this way, the foundations of community life are gradually established, allowing the child to feel recognised, respected, and in harmonious relationship with others.
